Flute Entrepreneurship

Dr. Hilary Janysek is an active flutist and educator specializing in entrepreneurship, group creativity, and positive psychology. As an orchestral flutist, She has performed with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, the McKinney Philharmonic Orchestra, the Austin Flute Choir, and the Brazos Breeze Flute Choir. Additionally, she was featured as a soloist with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, the Texas State University Orchestra, America’s Hometown Band, and the Victoria Bach Festival. As an active chamber musician and clinician, Dr. Janysek has collaboratively performed and presented at events such as the College Music Society Conference, the National Flute Association Convention, the Texas Flute Society Festival, and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. Dr. Janysek currently serves as the Treasurer and Young Artist Competition Coordinator for the Austin Flute Society where she coordinates several virtual events and competitions throughout the year.
In 2017, she won the National Association for Music Merchants President's Innovation Award to attend the NAMM Conference and promote music entrepreneurship. Her dissertation research included a qualitative study on the entrepreneurship and collaboration of successful chamber ensembles. She has since presented workshops at Texas State University, The Texas Flute Society Festival and the Austin Flute Society festival encouraging entrepreneurial thoughts and actions.
Dr. Janysek is currently pursuing a certificate in Positive Psychology, with which she will provide coaching sessions and strategies for musicians and students to reduce anxiety and build a healthy mindset that is necessary for a career in music.
An enthusiastic educator, Dr. Janysek currently serves as the assistant professor of flute and music history at Texas Lutheran University. She has built a successful private studio of over 30 students based in Austin, TX. Her students have advanced to region, area, and state band competitions and have placed in local Young Artist Competitions.
Dr. Janysek earned a Doctor of Arts degree in Flute Performance from Ball State University (BSU) in December 2018. There, she studied with Dr. Mihoko Watanabe, held graduate assistantships in Music History and Music Education, and completed a certificate in Entrepreneurial Music. She received her Master of Music Degree from BSU and her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Texas State University, where she studied with Dr. Adah Toland Jones.
