Adah Toland Jones, Professor of Flute at Texas State University, is also Principal Flute with the Austin Opera and the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra and plays frequently with the Austin Symphony. She holds B.M. and M.M. degrees and a Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a Doctor of Arts degree from Ball State University where she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Citation. Her principal teachers include Patricia George, Joseph Mariano, Paul Boyer, and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
At Texas State, she was awarded the University Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities and was runner-up from the College of Fine Arts and Communication for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Jones has performed and conducted masterclasses at flute festivals and universities throughout the U.S., in the U.K., Bulgaria and Dominica, West Indies.
Activities with the National Flute Association include performances at numerous conventions, conducting the Opening Ceremonies Flute Choir, the High School and Professional Flute Choirs, membership on the Pedagogy Committee, Coordinator of the Professional Flute Choir and judging various competitions including flute choir events and the high school soloist competition. Dr. Jones can also be heard on the Harmonia Mundi Label recording Samuel Barber: An American Romantic with the Grammy Award Winning vocal ensemble, Conspirare-The Company of Voices, directed by Craig Hella Johnson as well as on the soundtrack for the movie Knight of Cups, directed by Terrence Malik. Her publication “The Flute Choir Method Book” is used by flute choirs worldwide. A highlight of recent years was a feature article “Teaching Flute at Texas State University”, an extensive interview article published in the national flute journal “Flute Talk” in May 2014. Dr. Jones is also an artist for Burkart Flutes and Piccolos.
Students from the flute studio have consistently been winners of the annual Concerto Competition and the Texas State Flute Choir has performed throughout the state and at the National Flute Association Convention. Graduates from the Texas State flute studio have continued their studies at such prestigious graduate schools as University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, Ball State University, University of North Texas, Texas Tech University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, University of Cincinnati - College Conservatory of Music, the University of South Carolina and Texas Women’s University while some have also continued performing with careers in military music organizations or in positions as church musicians. Former students also hold teaching positions at every level of public school music from elementary through high school. Flute alumni have also been appointed to college positions at The University of the Incarnate Word, Texas Lutheran University, Prairie View A&M, Schreiner College and Northwest Vista College.
